Steven Thomas
Week4-2

1. From the reading: Developing Personal And Emotional Relationships Via Computer Mediated Communication by Brittney Chenault: What are some of the challenges of electronic communities?
Its hard to express true feelings and emotions, it’s difficult to research CMC because people don’t want to allow access to their personal correspondence.

2. Review this discussion of a chat room dialogue saved on September 11 2001 and discuss how the conversation in the chat room changed once this event began to unfold.
Well the chatroom actually only had two people in it talking between themselves then right after the attack there were seventy lines per minute being written. This shows that no matter what the need to communicate people now turn to the computer.

3. From the same discussion paper above what is the difference between moderated and unmoderated chat rooms?
Moderated chat rooms are chat rooms where different people will go into and ask questions to one specific “expert,” whereas, unmoderated chat rooms are chatrooms in which anyone can talk with anyone else and everyone is talking together.

4. Why are emoticons considered to be a “symbolic” form of communication? (See CS 3.3.1.1 Emoticons at: CS 3.3.1.1 Emoticons
Because they are not letters, they are not alphabetical. They are pictures used to depict a word or phrase.

5. Read The Effects of Computers on Traditional Writing. Discuss why 'Computers reintroduce many oral characteristics into electronic writing'?
Computers reintroduce many oral characteristics into electronic writing because people see talking online as more of a discussion and not so much as formal writing. People see “typing” online more as “talking” online. It’s more like talking on the phone and less like writing letters. Even the word “chat” is a type of oral communication.

Steven Thomas
Week4-1
1.Chose five e-zines from other students in this class (see left column) and write a few sentences on each one on what their e-zine is about and critique its format and usability. Of the zines you visit would you return to them for updates.

I visited jare sint. His ezine I about cars and paintball, it seemed interesting.. Edwina smiths ezine was very creative on mutants. The format was good. Looks professional. Argenis Rodriguez- wine and dine is about food. It was simple but clear.James Salpietro- surfing- nice picture but I don’t see any informations provided by tte author only links.
2.Discuss the use of icons on the net and list ten commonly used ones - plus write a short message using only emoticons (or mostly at least) Emoticons are used to send the message of your emotion through the internet. Frown, crying, smile, kiss, grim face, Tongue out, big smile, wink, confused, cursing. Hi {{{{{{you}}}}}} , want to go for (_), [_], or [[]] ?
3. Read the section on hypertext and answer Why Bolter say hypertextual thinking is unnatural . He said that hypertext is unnatural because we are in the age of print, and that the reader and writer need to have open attitudes because some statements maybe true and not true at the same time.
4 What is important about the PROJECT XANADU - who started it and what is its link to hypertext . Ted Nelson created Project Xanadu. He created a format to read hypertext easier. handles automatic version management and rights management through deep connection
5 Stuart Moulthrop is one of the leaders in hypertext fiction. You will spend about half an hour exploring his site and answer the questions below
• What happens when you refresh the page - what do you think Moulthrop did this for? A new image shows up when the page is refreshed to keep the reader involved and interested.
• Go to the 'hypertexts' link and click on 'The Color of Television' from the page (not from here) and follow the link-story to the beginning - what was the colour of the sky.....?
• Follow the story - click on 'color' that you used for the above question - what becomes of the 'levitating TV'?
• What happens when you click in the TV box and scroll around in the tv?
• Go back a page and click on 'sky' and follow the links and write a paragraph what the story is about
7. Open Word and write a short story about anything - make several links to your own pages. Go to your Angelfire or Geocities site. It can be as simple as you want or as complex as Moutthrop. Highlight at least four words that will take the reader to the next page and back
8. From 'Influence of the World Wide Web on literature' view the section "MULTIPLICITY"; what are some of the issues facing online hypertextual fiction writing?one issue facing hypertextual fiction writings Too many links and people wil lnot see all of them.
9. Read the section on Identity and ' Identity and Performance in Cyberspace ' and discuss the construction of identity online. In cyberspace we are who we want us to be. We perform as we imagine it and make a character accordingly.

Week3-4

1. From the section '1.2 Evolution of language from early utterances to chatroom utterances' anwser why it is that 'With technological communication the individual’s identity is not clear'.
2. What is IRC?
Internet Relay Chat (IRC) is the most used online chat software and has many individual server companies
3. what are MUDs?
Multi-User Dungeons, or MUDs present a world through text descriptions; players move around by typing sentences. In MUDs, a user can simulate or “text” such physically impossible activities as communicating telepathically, shape-shifting, teleporting, creating little machine selves, and conjuring birds and pleasure domes out of thin air. Curiously, despite the magical aura of self-determining expressivity this suggests, second person narrative is the viewpoint of choice for text MUDs, the user able to type in a direct command to a character..
4. what is the first of the new paradigm shifts discussed?
Firstly, there is the shift from print to computerization. Print relies on hierarchy and linearity, technologising itself into organizational categories which privilege the producer or author over the receiver or reader.
5. What is this autor's 'Purpose of examining online conversation'?
The authors purpose of discussion online conversation is to explain to the readers how he first got interested in the internet and when he became interested what he first did when he use to use the internet. Now he has expanded his horizon with his use of the internet passed to talking on it.

6. Discuss why the reader is important as part of the chat room dialogue.
Most simply put, it is the participant-observer in the chatroom, the writer-reader of the text, who influences and is influenced by the chat milieu. But while this is at one level a shared and negotiative act, it is at another a private and self-assertive one
7. Why have I taken an ethnographic approach to researching text-based chatrooms
Such a position legitimates analysis of the new texting-enterprises of CMC – but it also anticipates that these too will have powers of social and cultural formation
8. What are the Unique features of chatrooms?
Some things in which I find unique about chatrooms is the ability to talk to more than one person at the same time including 2 or more people all having the same conversation. I also think it is unique how if one person wants to show another person something, many people can see it also.

9. What is ODAM?
Online Discourse Analytic Methods (ODAM) I have developed methodology to enable meaningful exploration of chatroom talk. My method draws on conventions conversational analysis but adds the following new understandings.

week 3-3

1. Read the article on How To Use HTML Meta Tags and explain how the proper words for your page will help you get a higher linking in a search engine. Search engines use key words on the meta tag to help find what you are looking for, and so that would allow your site to be at the top of the list.
2. Go to the META TAGS GENERATOR and fill in the blanks then copy and paste what is provided into the code section of your dreamweaver page (copy over the "title" section)
3. After doing today's lesson and doing the above number one exercise (adding a title and keywords) submit your zine to search engines. Go to http://www.submitexpress.com/ and also sumbit to Yahoo, Done, Yahoo takes several weeks though.
4. How should writing be adjusted for the web to increase its usability? By putting a lot of links and making the language easy to read.5. What is Fair use. See Copyright on the Internet by Thomas G. Field, Jr. last viewed 4 June, 2003 online at http://www.fplc.edu/tfield/copynet.htm You can use other peoples things as long as they are credited and as long as you are not profiting from the other person’s work.
6. Tell what the different sections in this URL represent. http://www.cyberartsweb.org/cpace/theory/pena/index2.html What I want you to see is which part of the URL is the server [the domain name] and etc - you can figure this out by starting with http://www.cyberartsweb.org then adding sections between / and / and tell what each does. 1) is the site map 2) is the cyberart database 3) is CCR/NUS 4) is Singapore and south east Asia 5) is The world 6) is cyberart exhibition in Singapore 7) is cyberspace web by George Landow.
7. Read What's wrong with academic writing on the web? Inverting the pyramid and write what is wrong with academic writing on the web? The academic style of writing does not work on the internet. Users need to know conclusions first not last.

Steven Thomas

Week3-2

1. In the article Seven MistakesNewbie Ezine Publishers Make by Sivasubramanian (you will need to pronounce his name for the test - not really) is this article for your type of ezine or for another type - why? Think audience
I don’t think that this article relates to my zine at all. I don’t think it applies to my zine because my zine is about marijuana, and this zine had nothing to do with that. My audience will be people interested in smoking and I think the audience of this zine is the complete opposite.
2. Even though this ezine is in another language - discuss what it is about and don't just say music - if music - what type do you think it is on about? Discuss the overall layout and colour scheme.
Obviously any person can tell that this ezine is about music but I think it is about a certain type of music. It seems that it is about Latin music as well as country music. I think this because of the orange background color and also because of the language on the web site.
3. What is the Importance of Using A Template?
Whether you publish text or HTML email (or both), be sure to create and use a template for your ezine messages. This way, you won't be forced to recreate your ezine's format for every new issue. You can simply copy and paste the content of every new issue into the template and it's ready to send.
4. Find out about e-books and discuss what they are and whether they may replace hardcopy book
E-books are files which can be downloaded and read on a PC or a portable device such as a Palm or Ipaq. E-books may eventually replace hard cover books and if e-books were going to replace hard cover books it will not be for a very long time.
5. From 'Tips for Developing Content for Your E-Zine' What is 'the secret' of a good ezine that would make sense to use in respect to yours?
A secret that would work fopr my ezine i think would have an image always going across the screen to keep the audiences attention. For my ezine I think a picture of a leaf would keep repeating over and over again would keep my audience interested.

week3-1
Steven Thomas
Week3-1

1. Read the article "GIF vs. JPEG" and describe which would be best for the images on your zine. Also, read Understanding Images Basics to help with your answer.
JPEG would be best to use for my zine because it comes out the more clear than GIF pictures.
2. Is the using of the gif format legal or not?
Yes using GIF format is legal
3. I did the check and they said that I need to check how some of the page is set up

June 1st

Week 2-1

1.Discuss your "art" of making a homepage today in Dreamweaver - this is today's journal entry for your bloggs .

The art oof making a homepage in Dreamweaver is pretty confusing. You need to change the format of pictures into Jpeg and you also need to FTP things in order to see them on the web. The art i chose was a picture of muhammed ali, the boxer. Dreamweaver is very complicated and i hope i figure it out.

2. what is the URL for your image once you have saved it to your site?

http://www.albany.edu/~st8035/cassius.jpg

Week2-2

What is the difference between HTML and XHTML
What are three "flavors" of XHTML 1.0:
When I insert an image in Dreamweaver (or any webtext thingy) it looks like this why?

Why will the conference discussed on this page http://www.unicttaskforce.org/index.asp be of signifance?
Copy and paste the CONFERENCE MANIFESTO into your journal.

1 HTML is the lingua franca for publishing hypertext on the World Wide Web. It is a non-proprietary format based upon SGML, and can be created and processed by a wide range of tools, from simple plain text editors - you type it in from scratch- to sophisticated WYSIWYG authoring tools. HTML uses tags such as and to structure text into headings, paragraphs, lists, hypertext links.
The Extensible HyperText Markup Language (XHTML™) is a family of current and future document types and modules that reproduce, subset, and extend HTML, reformulated in XML. XHTML Family document types are all XML-based, and ultimately are designed to work in conjunction with XML-based user agents. The difference is XHTML is just an extension of HTML.

2 XHTML 1.0 Strict - Use this when you want really clean structural mark-up, free of any markup associated with layout. Use this together with W3C's Cascading Style Sheet language (CSS) to get the font, color, and layout effects you want.
XHTML 1.0 Transitional - Many people writing Web pages for the general public to access might want to use this flavor of XHTML 1.0. The idea is to take advantage of XHTML features including style sheets but nonetheless to make small adjustments to your markup for the benefit of those viewing your pages with older browsers which can't understand style sheets. These include using the body element with bgcolor, text and link attributes.
XHTML 1.0 Frameset - Use this when you want to use Frames to partition the browser window into two or more frames.
3 The image looks like this because this image only shows where the picture is on the local server, the full address of the picture has to be given.
4 This conference is important because it brings world Internet issues into world view. It discusses Information Communication Technologies, and how they have the capacity to address some recent challenges. Their unique power can improve the productivity of teachers and administrators, extend education to hard-to-reach places and provide students with compelling and effective content and tools for learning - more efficiently and at lower cost than traditional methods.

Week2-3

1. Look at these sites and tell what the requirements are for using the images offered for "free"
You don’t have to do anything to get these things because they are free.

2. Are these animated images free? Yes
3. Are these collections of clipart free? yes
4. Are these backgrounds free? Yes
5. What about the images on this site http://neuage.indiko.com/wombat.htm could you use them? No
6. Read the article 10 Big Myths about copyright explained and list each one and write a sentence or two (do not cut and paste what it says) what it means.
1) "If it doesn't have a copyright notice, it's not copyrighted."
This means that if a person does not formally tell everyone on his website where they got their information from, than it was illegally copyrighted.
2) "If I don't charge for it, it's not a violation."
That is completely false because u don’t have to be charged for anything to be doping something illegal.
3) "If it's posted to Usenet it's in the public domain."
Nothing modern is in the public domain anymore unless the owner explicitly puts it in the public domain.
4) "My posting was just fair use!"
The "fair use" exemption to (U.S.) copyright law was created to allow things such as commentary, parody, news reporting, research and education about copyrighted works without the permission of the author.
5) "If you don't defend your copyright you lose it." -- "Somebody has that name copyrighted!"
Copyright is effectively never lost these days, unless explicitly given away
6) "If I make up my own stories, but base them on another work, my new work belongs to me."
U.S. Copyright law is quite explicit that the making of what are called "derivative works" -- works based or derived from another copyrighted work -- is the exclusive province of the owner of the original work.
7) "They can't get me, defendants in court have powerful rights!"
Copyright law is mostly civil law. If you violate copyright you would usually get sued, not be charged with a crime.
8) "Oh, so copyright violation isn't a crime or anything?"
Actually, recently in the USA commercial copyright violation involving more than 10 copies and value over $2500 was made a felony.
9) "It doesn't hurt anybody -- in fact it's free advertising."
It's up to the owner to decide if they want the free ads or not. If they want them, they will be sure to contact you
10) "They e-mailed me a copy, so I can post it."
To have a copy is not to have the copyright. All the E-mail you write is copyrighted. However, E-mail is not, unless previously agreed, secret.
11) “So I can't ever reproduce anything?"
Myth #11 (I didn't want to change the now-famous title of this article) is actually one sometimes generated in response to this list of 10 myths.

7. What are the main principles of the "copyleft" movement?
Copyleft is the application of copyright law to force derivative works to also be released with a copyleft license. So long as all of those wanting to modify the work accept the terms, the net effect is to facilitate successive improvement by a wide range of contributors. Those who are unwilling or unable to accept the terms are prohibited from creating derivative works.

8. What is Lynx? What are its long term advantages for businesses?
Linux is an open source operating system that offers UNIX reliability at Intel prices. Linux is built by a large community of developers that use the Internet to share source code, test software, submit bug fixes, and deliver new product features.

9. What will your ezine be on? Sports, politics, penguins, hip hop, poetry, astrology, tofu...?
My ezine is going to be on sports. It is going to cover a coupke of sports such as basketball baseball and hockey.

10. What will be the name of your ezine?
The name of my ezine is Stay High 24-7.

11. What is the purpose of the e-zine?
The purpose of an ezine is to make a web page on something that is interesting to you.

12. Who do you want to read your e-zine?
I think the people that will read my ezine witl be potheads and teenagers.

13. How much do you want to cover in your e-zine?
I want my site to cover all fascets of the marijuana experience, including the smoking and the ettiquette.

14. How do you hope to affect your readers?
I hope that the people that read it get a better understanding of how to be high, act high, and live high.
15. How often will you publish to reach your objectives and goals?
I always try to reaching my objectives and my goals because if you don’t try you will never be success.

Week 2-4

1. Performance can be optimized bye adding graphics. The
details of the page should not be too fancy, or big, should not contain any distraction graphics that take away from the message. It is also important to limit the amount graphics, make sure it loads faster then 7 sec, no more then 3 images on a page. It is important to use the “meta tags” properly, title tag being most important. Links will also help get your site indexed, which in colarbortrion with help optimize your site!

2. How does this image communicate?
This image catches the eye of the viewer, because it shows sex appeal. Her body language directs attention to her clothing and makeup.

How do they communicate together?
By using the two together, the advertisement gets the views visually stimulated as well as intellectually, really helping promote the product by grabbing all aspects of viewers attention.

3. The webs nature has become one of duality. This is because of the hypertext system and the new sophisticated software interface. The dual nature has led to much confusion, forcing designors to choose to “update” to the new or stay with the old, providing a “gap” or “match” in the systems.

4.)According to google.com “Semantic Web” is; An extension of the current web in which information is given well-defined meaning, better enabling computers and people to work in cooperation. [source] The Semantic Web is the abstract representation of data on the World Wide Web, based on the RDF standards and other standards to be defined. It is being developed by the W3C, in collaboration with a large number of researchers and industrial partners. [source]
This is important and exciting because it computers will be able to take in and understand the text displayed on various web pages.

5. This E-zine is a collection of people’s poems expressing their feelings and experiences with communication between other individuals, some close, some not.

May 25th

Steven Thomas

Week 1-1: Name as many members of your class as you can remember.
-Mike, Mango, Sami Said, James, Colin, Jordan, Drew

Week 1-2: Write a paragraph on what you see as communicating on the Internet.
-I see communicating on the internet as interacting with others that use the internet in search of the same things as you. Whether it be through an instant message, E-mail, or even viewing the same website as another person communicating on the internet is the act of social interaction without the use of voice of sight. You communicate with written text.

Week 1-2
1. What is your 'blogger' address?
http://ThaSdotMan.blogspot.com
2. Write a couple of sentences on each of these new tensions that technology brings to society.
Centralization vs. Fragmentation
Technology brings tensions to society because of the ideas of centralization and fragmentation. The internet hinders centralization because people do not have to be close in proximity to each other in order to communicate. You can communicate with someone in china on the internet just as fast as you can communicate with someone sitting next to you.
A holistic perspective vs. specialized knowledge
With so much new information and technology growing it is increasingly hard to understand all that needs to be known in the internet. Because of that people are starting to learn specialized information instead of the greater holistic perspective. Only few people have the knowledge that runs all the systems.
Too much information vs. too little information
There is sometimes a problem today with too little information because sometimes you cannot take the information given to you as fact. There is so much opinion floating around its hard to decipher. There is also the problem of too much information. Any person can post information so you need to be able to tell what a credible source is and what isn’t.
Leadership vs. Fellowship
In today’s internet people seem to be put on the same platform in topics. It doesn’t seem to matter if someone is young or old, black or white, or any of those other topics because the idea of fellowship is at an all time high on the internet.

Worker isoliation/alientation vs. Community connections
There are less community connections today and more isolation because people can stay in there houses and goes on the web. They isolate themselves to their computer and their community connections therefore seem to flop.

Sharing vs. Withholding access to information
Sharing is at a high right now because people don’t mind sharing information. They aren’t really giving anything up and they still can let other people see what they see. The internet tries to withhold information to youngsters but that has not really been too successful.

Information "filters" vs. Disintermediation
This is important because sometimes we need to filter information so certain people can’t access to. For example children shouldn’t be able to view pornographic materials.
Public intervention vs. Private decision-making
We can accomplish both of these using the internet and technology. Public intervention can help people who need help so they can reach out to others. Private decision making is important in business and making deals.
3. Which cities are America's Most Wired Cities?
San Francisco, San Diego, Washington D.C., Seattle, Portland
4. Which cities are the world's Most Wired Cities?
Singapore, Tokyo, London, Moscow, San Francisco
5. What are the next three largest users of the Internet after English speaking people?
Chinese, Japanese, Spanish
6. What Arab country uses the Internet the most?
United Arab Emirates
7. 'Future City' what does the author say will be the affect the future city will have on the individual? What do you think the affect the future city will have on the individual?
The author thinks that the future will affect the individual in the fact that there will be no such thing as freedom. He says that it is like a machine in which every part as its purpose. It needs to be like this in order for the machine to work. I think that the future city will be like the author says except i think it will be alot more chaotics and underground chaos will rule the world.

Week 1-3

1. What are some of the global impacts of being able to create a homepage on the Internet?
Some of the global impacts include being able to have your information seen by many people across the world. People can visually view your likes, dislikes and any pertinent information you feel is necessary for the viewer.

2. Where is the technological city state and why is it refereed to as the 21st century fortress city?
The technological city state is Singapore. It is referred to as the 21st century fortress city because everything can work within itself. Every part of the city is enclosed and the rules are very strict.

3. What is right or wrong about machines influence on our lives?
I think machines are a good influence in our live because it lets us be lazy . I enjoy being lazy and machines such as robots help to let me be lazy.

4. When you have received three other student's websites write a few paragraphs on what the person is telling us with their website.
I read about this kid named mike manganiello who loves beavers. Apparently he loves drunken beavers that listen to hip hop. The next person was Noelle. She likes weezer, is a junior at suny Albany, and likes snowboarding. John likes to call himself moofa and enjoys hunting, fishing, pumping iron, and his family.

5. Refresh your page and link to someone with your similar interests, which are linked from your profile.
I researched the results of marijuana and observed that a guy named gonzo had the same interest as me. This guy also like a clockwork orange, porn, the doors and Jim Morrison. This guy also seems to like the movie fear and loathing in las vegas.

6. Read the article about the Baghdad blogger and write a couple of paragraphs on how Salam Pax saw his blog and how others, especially in the Western Media saw his blog. What would you see as the similairty or differences between a blog and an 'embedded reporter' with a United States organisation such as CNN news and which would you believe would be giving a true report of fact or which would be giving a reportage that was politcally or motivated by the writer's worldview? You may want to compare what Salam Pax says with what this reporter who was an "embedded reporter" with NBC has to say.
Salam Pax was surprised by the amount of traffic his blog was getting. He was also surprised by the fact that the people visiting his site looked at it as if he was speaking for all the Iraqi people. An embedded reporter might have a more realistic view of what is going on, but they might have their stories looked at by their bosses before they are published, it may hold back information. The embedded reporter would have too many things/people influencing/motivating his writings.

Week 1 -4
1. Find three sites on the Internet which addresses political issues of Internet usage and in two-three sentences discuss the site's rhetoric saying saying what it's view points are and what issues are being discussed. Provide the link.
a) http://www.mevic.org/papers/inet-mena.html
While the MENA region is the least “wired” region of the world, it offers at the same time the greatest potential for growth. The rapid diffusion of new technologies, the growth of Internet use at astounding rates, the recent and expected future changes in leadership, all offer a cautious degree of hope and optimism for the region.
b) http://www.cnn.com/2004/TECH/internet/01/14/geek.study.reut/
The findings of the first World Internet Project report present an image of the average Netizen that contrasts with the stereotype of the loner "geek" who spends hours of his free time on the Internet and rarely engages with the real world.
c) http://dawn.thot.net/e-govt-survey.html
The Canadian government has aggressively pursued the adoption and expansion of e-government and associated e-forms and e-services providing individuals with a variety of electronic options for participating in the political process.

2. Using an on-line translator (such as altavista's Babel) put in your journal what the English translation for this is and what do you think it is saying?
Dans Les Ruines D'Une Abbaye
Souls both, delighted, singing! How one s'aime! How one picking spring that God seme!Quels laughter etincelants Dansces shades Full formerly with white faces, Of hearts sombres! On is any expenses marry One s'envoie the charming cries vary joie.Purs ebats meles with the wind Which frissone! Gaite that the black brood Assaisonne! On thins out the leaves of of the jasmines On the stone Or l abbess joint hands In priere.(Les tombs, of cross marks, Font part Of these plays, a little spades By l'ortie.)
I think this is a prayer or something religious.
3. Write a five line poem or a short paragraph on anything. Have it translated into French, German, Korean and Russian then translate it back and put in your journal what you got.
English to French- Sarclez l'amour de I, mauvaise herbe que j'ai besoin, quand vous obtenez soulevé, vous volent, pourquoi boisson et commande, quand vous pouvez fumer et voler.
French to English- Weed I coils, Weed I need, When you get lifted, You fly, Why drink and drive, When you edge smoke and fly.

English to German- Säubern Sie I Liebe, Unkraut, das ich benötige, wenn Sie angehoben erhalten, Sie fliegen, warum Getränk und Antrieb, wenn Sie rauchen und fliegen können.
German to English- Weed I love, Weed I need, When you GET lifted, You fly, Why drink and drive, When you CAN smoke and fly.

English to Korean-너가 연기가 나고, 날l 수 있을 때, 너가 들어 얻을 때 위드i사랑, 위드 나가 필요로 하는, 너는, 왜 음료와 드라이브 날n다.
Korean to English- Weed I love and Weed I need and When you get lifted and You fly and Why drink and drive and When you can smoke and fly.

English to Russian- Выполите влюбленность I, засоритель, котор я, когда вы получаете поднятыми, вы летите, почему питье и привод, когда вы можете курить и летать.
Russian to English- Weed I Love, Weed I need, When you get lifted, You fly, Why drink and drive, When you can smoke and fly.
